Yes, New York City is the best city in the world for art. Museums and galleries galore and every block painted with an interesting piece of art. The street art in Manhattan is diverse and what gives the borough its character. This past year I’ve seen some amazing pieces. Colorful, alternative and some very poignant. There are incredible accomplishments in art all over the city. This year I’ve scanned from The Lower East Side all the way up to Spanish Harlem and truly found artistic gold. The street art in Manhattan really helps make it the best city in the world.
Houston Street Art Walls
Manhattan is large and a number of art pieces can go unseen simply cause we don’t know where to look. Many pieces seem to randomly be placed on any available wall but there are a few locations that are good go-to’s to find great street art. Houston Street is one great example. On the east side of the city along Houston starting at 1st Avenue and running east there is a lot of construction going on. And in true New York fashion the construction seems to last for 8 or 9 years. Trailers and barriers run along Houston. They would be an eye-soar but luckily a great art project has been started there and new murals pop up every month replacing old ones covering the concrete barriers in place to shield the jackhammering and potholes. But art is always there. Helping a drab situation look like a colorful outdoor gallery.
Some businesses in Manhattan are keen on helping out the artistic community and believing over-all in the beautification of the city. L’Asso Pizza on the Lower East Side is a fantastic example. Every few weeks a new incredible piece seems to be covering their wall. The Lower East Side may be the best neighborhood for street art throughout the entire New York area because the businesses and residential building seem to not mind street art and graffiti. In fact, they seem to encourage it. The Lower East Side is the gritty artistic soul of Manhattan.
Tictail is a marketplace downtown that houses independent brands from all over the world. A great place to support independent artists. They also have a rotating mural wall on display outside the market. New artists are featured regularly. Always alternative, always fun, always a great spot to find great street art.
